I have to admit, this story is extremely embarrassing to tell you...
But, I have to share this turning point in my life to show you that no matter how tired of out-of-shape you might be, you can turn all of that around quickly, increase your energy levels, and improve your body, without spending much time in the gym at all.
Only a few years ago I was just like everyone else. I had no clue…I was a fat mess and was hopping from supplement to supplement and trying diet after diet until one day I had enough.
During this time I was a Division 1 college athlete and I had already been lifting weights for years and had trained with world class strength coaches.
Every day I would hit the gym and lift weights. I never missed a workout, week-in or week-out. I’d even train on Saturdays – and sometimes Sundays!
But during a training session I injured my shoulder and was facing a long rehab and weeks and weeks away from my training and the gym.
Thinking about the prospect of rehab, and the possibility of never fully recovering, I started sinking into depression.
I started drinking beer, eating tons of fast food, and slowly transformed myself from a well conditioned athlete into a fat slob.
Deep down, I knew that I had to make some serious changes if I had any chance of making a full recovery and getting back into playing shape before the season started.
It did not help that my blood pressure was sky high because of my poor diet, and that I had a family history of high blood pressure and diabetes.
I was completely unmotivated to get up and do anything, but I was sick of feeling lazy and lethargic.
I was supposed to be a high level athlete. I was supposed to be strong and fit. During this time my bench press probably went down by at least 50 pounds or more!
I started getting angry and disgusted with myself. I didn’t like how I looked or how I felt.
Here I was, a high-level athlete, and I was wasting my time lying in bed, eating junk food, and feeling too tired and lazy to do anything but sit around and eat more junk food.
I was an out of shape mess!
…And I was in TOTAL denial....until one day...
I remember this day like it was yesterday.
I was at a beach party with some friends just chilling in my swim trunks.
And an attractive young lady friend of mine pulled me aside...and absolutely busted my fat bubble.
What she said to me absolutely rocked me to my core.
She said that it was shameful that I had "let myself go" and that I looked like a complete joke.
She told me that I was just another WASHED UP athlete that gave it up and got fat!
I couldn't believe this girl had the guts to come up to me and tell me this stuff. She was supposed to be my friend....she was supposed to have my back.
Deep down though...I knew she was right.
For the first time in my life I felt self conscious...
I went home that night and thought long and hard about what had happened earlier.
I remember lying awake that night, totally frustrated…feeling sorry for myself...
Finally, I got off the couch and decided to start training again. I needed to lose some weight and was desperately trying to figure out a way to lose the embarrassing belly fat ASAP.
This girl had put me in my place, and had lit my competitive fire.
I was sick of being out of shape, and I wanted to prove to the world that I was not some washed up joke that got fat and sloppy.
But I also knew that I had my work cut out for me and that a restricted diet and hamster style cardio wasn’t the answer.
I knew there had to be a better way.
The next day I was back at the gym.
I hammered out an intense workout...but it just didn’t feel right....something was missing...
For the next several weeks I went about my normal workout routine, but nothing was happening…I was still fat!
